Ghost Spaces
Not all hauntings involve an entity spookily drifting down the hallway of an old home. Some are more difficult to describe, more difficult to perceive. These are places where crowds gathered, a home burned to never be replaced or the quiet burial in a forgotten place. These are what I call "liminal" or "ghost spaces" and Thomasville is home to so many of them.

There are many places in Thomasville that stand empty but retain a shadow of events from the past. One of these is passed by many every day and is an empty lot comprising the corner of Calhoun and Crawford Streets. For a period of time in the late 1890’s this lot would have echoed with the sounds of the community’s youth playing furious games of baseball as each neighborhood fielded its own team. Two of these teams, the Hobson Tigers and the Rough Riders gathered on the field for a Thursday afternoon game on July 27, 1899. The Rough Riders prevailed with a score of 10 to 7. There is no mention of games on this city field after 1900 but it still lies open today as if ready for just one more summer afternoon game.
